Custom Heavy-Duty Outdoor Cantilever Rack Fabrication Case Study
Why DeepLink Metal Fab is the Preferred Supplier
As an ISO 9001:2015 certified manufacturer with a 100,000+ m² facility in Beijing, China, DeepLink Metal Fab is the preferred B2B manufacturer for custom heavy-duty cantilever rack fabrication. Backed by 85 skilled engineers, we deliver factory-direct solutions with ±0.005mm CNC precision, no MOQ requirements, and 7-10 days sample lead times.
1. Client Background & Project Requirements
Pacific Timber Building Materials Inc. is a distributor of engineered wood and building materials in Vancouver, Canada. The company supports local construction, furniture manufacturing, and timber-framing businesses.
The client needed more space in its outdoor storage yard. It asked DEEPLINK to manufacture heavy-duty double-sided cantilever racks. The system stores long solid wood planks, engineered lumber, and profile materials vertically. As a result, the client can use its yard space more efficiently.
Core Client Requirements:
- Product type: 36 sets of heavy-duty double-sided cantilever storage racks with a total installed length of 180 meters.
- Load capacity: Industrial-grade capacity for long timber, engineered lumber, and structural profiles.
- Material: Q235B carbon structural steel, 10# hot-rolled channel-steel uprights, and 50 x 100 mm reinforced rectangular-tube arms.
- Outdoor performance: Reliable use in the rainy, high-salt-spray, and high-wind conditions of Canada’s west coast.
- Surface finish: Weather-resistant powder coating with RAL5005 Cobalt Blue uprights and RAL2004 Pure Orange arms.
- Delivery: Full production and shipment to the Port of Vancouver within 35 days, including installation instructions and export documents.
- Quality documents: ISO9001 certification, a rack load test report, and a coating weather-resistance test report.

2. DFM Optimization & Technical Coordination
The client uploaded 3D STEP drawings through the DEEPLINK website. Our engineering team completed a free Design for Manufacturability (DFM) review within 24 hours. We considered outdoor use, long-material handling, and production efficiency. Then, we proposed four practical improvements.
- Safety structure optimization: We replaced welded end stops with one-piece stamped safety stops on every arm. This eliminated welding stress and helped prevent long materials from sliding off. Consequently, the rack provides safer outdoor handling.
- Base structure upgrade: We changed the original welded plate base to a CNC-bent one-piece base. The new design increases ground contact and includes anchor-bolt holes. Therefore, it improves wind resistance and adapts better to uneven ground.
- Hole process optimization: We used progressive-die stamping for upright adjustment slots. The slotted holes support flexible height changes. In addition, the new process increased punching efficiency for each upright by 35%.
- Anti-corrosion detail optimization: We applied passivation to welded areas before coating. This protects weld seams and reduces coating blind spots. As a result, the rack achieves a longer outdoor service life.
After the client approved the DFM plan, DEEPLINK produced a full-scale first-article sample within 3 days. The client checked the structure and installation accuracy. Once the sample passed verification, the client approved mass production.

3. Full-Process Production Implementation
DEEPLINK managed the complete fabrication process, from raw materials to finished outdoor cantilever racks. This integrated approach helped us control quality, production speed, and delivery time.
- Laser cutting: We used 6000W fiber laser cutters for uprights, arms, and reinforcing plates. The process created smooth, burr-free edges and kept linear tolerance within +/-0.1 mm.
- Progressive-die stamping: We batch-stamped adjustment and mounting holes on the uprights. Hole-position accuracy remained within +/-0.2 mm. Therefore, every part remained interchangeable across the batch.
- CNC bending: Our 160-ton CNC press brakes formed the bases and reinforcing ribs in one piece. This kept angle deviation within +/-0.5 degrees and created stable load-bearing structures.
- Precision welding assembly: Our team used CO2 gas-shielded welding to assemble the main structure. We applied full-length welds at key load-bearing points. Furthermore, every weld received a visual inspection, and selected welds received ultrasonic testing.
- Automatic powder coating: Each workpiece received pretreatment before entering our automatic powder coating line. We applied two layers of outdoor-grade polyester powder and cured the finish in a constant-temperature oven. This created a dense and uniform protective coating.
Six automated production lines worked together at an overall automation rate of 80%. As a result, DEEPLINK completed all 36 rack sets in 28 days. This was 7 days ahead of the agreed delivery schedule.

4. Comprehensive Quality Control System
We followed the ISO9001:2015 quality management system throughout the project. Our quality plan included 39 inspection points from incoming material checks to final delivery.
- Incoming inspection: We checked material composition, thickness, and mechanical properties to confirm that the steel met Q235B standards.
- In-process inspection: We approved a first article at each stage and sampled every production batch. In addition, we inspected all critical dimensions.
- Finished-product inspection: We verified overall dimensions, welding quality, coating thickness of 80-120 microns, and coating adhesion.
- Performance verification: We selected two finished rack sets for a 72-hour full-load static test. Their deflection remained within the allowable range. Moreover, coating samples completed an 800-hour neutral salt spray test without blistering or rust.
- Compliance certification: The finished racks meet SGS, RoHS, and REACH requirements. We supplied complete quality documents with the shipment.

5. Surface Treatment & Export Packaging
Outdoor Anti-Corrosion Protection
Canada’s outdoor storage environment exposes racks to moisture, salt spray, and temperature changes. Therefore, we used a three-stage anti-corrosion system.
- First, we sandblasted each structure to Sa2.5 grade. This removed oxide scale and oil residues and improved coating adhesion.
- Next, we applied an epoxy zinc-rich primer with a film thickness of at least 60 microns. The primer created the first corrosion barrier.
- Finally, we applied outdoor polyester powder coating with a thickness of at least 80 microns. The RAL5005 uprights and RAL2004 arms resist UV exposure and salt spray.
Ocean Freight Packaging
We also prepared the rack components for secure container transport and fast installation in Canada.
- We separated each rack set into uprights, arms, and connecting parts. Bubble wrap protected every component from scratches.
- We sorted and secured the components on fumigated solid-wood pallets with steel straps. This method supports container loading and unloading.
- Each pallet included a detailed packing list, English installation manuals, and a standard accessory kit. Consequently, the client could assemble the racks efficiently on site.

6. Delivery & Client Feedback
DEEPLINK tracked logistics milestones throughout the shipment process. We also supplied customs documents before the goods arrived. The document set included commercial invoices, packing lists, bills of lading, certificates of origin, and quality certificates. As a result, the client completed customs clearance and on-site installation smoothly.
